SPRING HAS SPRUNG

.
.
A Prayer in Spring
by Robert Frost
.
Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.
.
.
Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.
.
.
And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.
.
.
.
“If people did not love one another,
I really don't see what use there would be
in having any spring.”

Here's a beautiful "video poem" by
Gary T. Czerwinski I found on YouTube.
Video poems are a unique, and fascinating, way
of presenting this ever-changing medium of art -
poems no longer just written or verbal,
but more than that. A couple of
quotes seem appropriate:
.
"Genuine poetry can communicate
before it is understood."
.
T.S. Eliot
.
"Poetry is an echo,
asking a shadow to dance."
.
Robert Frost.

BURIED TREASURE
by Clay Harrison
.
 Beneath the snows of Winter,
Spring treasures can be found
In seeds that lie there sleeping
Below the frozen ground.
.
While snow falls in the meadow,
The rose must get her rest.
Soon Spring will kiss his princess
And she must look her best.
.
Sleeping beauty shall awaken
And yawn without a sound
As sprigs of buried treasure
Come bursting from the ground.
.
All earth proclaims God's glory
When Spring is in the air.
Each bud fulfills a promise -
Each rose an unanswered prayer.
.
Spring is a resurrection -
Winter's stone is rolled away
To reveal God's buried treasure
Each sun-kissed springtime day.

Song of Solomon 2:11-12
.
for behold, the winter is past;
the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove
is heard in
 our land.

WE ARE LIKE THE MOON - WE CAN BECOME NEW AGAIN

.
.
.
.
The text below and the music
above are both about a Jewish
 ceremony called Birkat Halevana.
Debbie Friedman sings the song about
the matter from a Carnegie Hall concert.
It makes interesting background music
for the read.
.
From WE PLAN, GOD LAUGHS
by Sherre Hirsch
.
"CELEBRATING YOU"
.
Each month, Jews host a party for the moon.
The Jewish year is based on a lunar calendar,
and every month we take note of the passage of time
through the ritual of Birkat HaLevanah,
the blessing and celebration of the new moon.
What is surprising is when this ritual takes place.
You would think we would celebrate the full moon,
the night of romance.  We don't.  Instead we celebrate when
the moon is just a sliver in the sky and hardly noticeable.
Most times we need a flashlight even to see the blessing
on the page.
.
.
We bless the sliver because it expresses our faith in the future.
We are blessing what the moon can become.
It is a prayer of hope and belief and renewal.
Though we know that each month the moon
will wax and wane, the real purpose of this ceremony
is to remind us that we are like the moon.
We can become new again.
We can uncover more potential and find even more
of our beauty.  As it says in the prayer,
"Blessed are you, God, who says to the moon each month,
you will be new again just like my children."
.
.
Your potential is unlimited.  Each day, God revels in you.
From the day you were born until the day you die,
God is celebrating you.
God is not celebrating how much money you have made.
God is not celebrating your job title or your house.
God is celebrating each day that you are in his world.
Each day you have the potential to imitate him:
to create, to better, to discover, to build, to repair, and to laugh.
That is God's party, a joyous celebration of each one of
his creatures discovering her or his divine purpose.
.
.
God does not stop celebrating when you are thirteen,
fifty-three, or even ninety-three.  Just like my mom never
stopped celebrating my birthday.  She still makes it a big deal,
even now.  We are God's children.  Just like we celebrate our
children and see all that they can become.  God thinks that our
best selves are always in front of us.  Whether it is your second
birthday or your seventy-second,
God is hoping you will discover more
about your incredible soul with each passing year.

PRAYERS FOR DEPRESSION

.
.
Prayer When You Are Depressed
By: Dr. Walter L. Weston

God, life seems so bleak and useless right now.
I don't have any energy. I have no ambition to do much of anything. I am really feeling down. I feel "down on" myself and "down on" everyone around me. Even as I pray, I don't sense your presence. I am going through the motions, knowing that you are still with me.

I know that I am sacred and precious but they are
just words right now.
I know that my life has been worthwhile,
full of many wonderful people and experiences, much happiness and joy. I feel little of this right now. God, all I can do is affirm the goodness of life and try to hold on until the darkness is replaced
by your light and love.

Help me to spot the lies that my depressed emotions are telling me.
Life is good. I am good. You are good. Grant me hope. My loved ones love me. Life will be beautiful again. Soon, I will see the beauty around me again. Soon, I will again know vitality and purpose, happiness and love. Until then, give me the strength and hope to survive this day.

Help me to smile and laugh, even if just for a moment.
Be my strength and salvation. I ask you to restore me and make me whole. Fill me with the Word and the Spirit that I might be recreated anew. I praise and thank you. Amen.
.

Psalm 143.7-11

Come quickly, Lord, and answer me,
for my depression deepens.
Don’t turn away from me,
or I will die.
Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning,
for I am trusting you.
Show me where to walk,
for I give myself to you.
Rescue me from my enemies, Lord;
I run to you to hide me.
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
May your gracious Spirit lead me forward
on a firm footing.
For the glory of your name, O Lord, preserve my life.
Because of your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress.

PRAYER AND DECISION-MAKING

.
.
.
.
I pray today for people
faced with difficult decisions:
decisions which will seriously affect
their lives and the lives of their loved ones:
decisions about jobs,
about their marriage,
about where to live,
about money.
I pray for those who can see no way
through their problems:
for whom it is all too much.
Help them to see that you,
who control the universe,
are in control of their lives too.

PRAYER BEFORE AN IMPORTANT DECISION
.
Lord, Almighty God,
source of light, truth, and eternal goodness,
transform this present moment
into an hour of vision and inspiration.
Help me to find wisdom;
shed light on my thoughts.
May my aspirations come true
through righteous and good deeds.
Give me the strength to concentrate,
to think objectively,
and to see clearly.
Shed your light on me so that I may see
which decision to make.
Help me, O my Eternal God,
to avoid vanity and pride,
and thus be able to make worthy decisions
as a true child of yours.

Amen.

CYNICISM AND PRAYER

.
.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.
Cynicism creates a numbness toward life.

.
The opposite of a childlike spirit is a cynical spirit.
Cynicism is, increasingly, the dominant spirit
of our age.
Personally, it is my greatest struggle in prayer.
If I get an answer to prayer, sometimes I’ll think,
It would have happened anyway.
Other times I’ll try to pray but wonder if it
makes any difference.

.
Satan’s first recorded words are cynical.
.
To be cynical is to be distant.
While offering a false intimacy of being
in the know, cynicism actually destroys intimacy.
It leads to a creeping bitterness that can
deaden and even destroy the spirit.
.
Cynicism begins with the wry assurance that
everyone has an angle. Behind every
silver lining is a cloud. The cynic is always
observing, critiquing, but never engaged,
loving, and hoping.
.
Cynicism is a perverse version of being
in the world, but not of the world.”
“[Cynicism] protects you from crushing
disappointment, but it paralyzes you
from doing anything.
.
Cynicism and defeated weariness have
this in common: They both question the
active goodness of God on our behalf.
Left unchallenged, their low-level doubt
opens the door for bigger doubt.
.
A praying life is just the opposite.
It engages evil. It doesn’t take no for an answer.
The psalmist was in God’s face,
hoping, dreaming, asking. Prayer is feisty.
Cynicism, on the other hand, merely critiques.
It is passive, cocooning itself from the passions
of the great cosmic battle we are engaged.
It is without hope.

it best to include a link to Amazon - the
